The Ketamine Debate: Perspectives from the Mental Health Field

Updated: Oct 19

Recently, I attended a workshop focused on the use of medication for treating mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and ADHD. During the session, ketamine therapy, particularly for depression, sparked diverse opinions among the group of mental health professionals that were there for the training.

Some attendees expressed concerns, citing cases where individuals felt ketamine had addictive properties, or referencing public figures who suffered from misuse and even overdose. Others voiced skepticism about the commercial motives behind new clinics offering the treatment. Despite these concerns, it was highlighted that research consistently supports ketamine's effectiveness, especially in alleviating suicidality. The facilitator emphasized the importance of integrating ketamine with therapy, reassuring us of its safety profile, backed by its longstanding use as an anesthetic.

Personal Insights from Administering Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

As someone who has facilitated ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT) sessions for a few years, I've observed firsthand the transformative impact it can have when combined with professional therapy. At Koru Wellness, we know the importance of a structured therapeutic environment as opposed to unsupervised, or especially recreational use which can lead to high-risk behavior and missed therapeutic benefits.

Ketamine therapy at Koru Wellness involves a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Initial Evaluations: Every potential client undergoes a thorough medical and clinical intake to ensure KAT is a suitable and safe option.

  • Structured Sessions: Each session, lasting 2.5 hours, includes setting intentions, monitored administration, and substantial time for post-session processing with a therapist to maximize therapeutic outcomes.

  • Medical Supervision: A medical professional is always present, and we're equipped with emergency medical resources, although they're seldom needed.

  • Customized Dosing: We use the minimal effective dose tailored to individual needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Distinction of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Using ketamine without therapeutic guidance is like revving a Ferrari while in neutral—you’re not going to get anywhere. But adding a skilled therapist is like shifting that car from neutral to drive and having a qualified guide or mentor in the passenger seat. Ketamine is a short-term intervention, typically recommended for four to six sessions, to help clients navigate treatment hurdles and move forward on their path to recovery.

The Value of Informed Discussions

It’s encouraging to see ketamine therapy gaining attention among professionals, despite some skepticism. When administered responsibly within a medical and therapeutic framework, ketamine has significant potential to help clients who otherwise have felt stuck in traditional mental health treatment. At Koru Wellness, we're committed to providing a safe, effective, and transformative treatment experience.
